We’ve been playing through the beta for a while, and it seems like a solid MMO. It doesn’t do anything particularly new, but has some interesting features like a freeform music system and FFXI-like group attacks.

Many personalities, including Bilbo, Aragorn, and Gandalf, make appearances throughout the game. They’re all still preparing to move the One Ring out from Rivendell, and the game’s main story missions will follow that narrative’s development.

If you’re not completely burned out on high fantasy MMOs, this could be worth a look. What to Expect: If you’ve played S. Hopefully this Alone in the Dark, a more action oriented twist of the franchise, can deliver comparable scares.

At this point, we’ve seen very little of the actual gameplay, so we really can’t say how it might turn out. Each mission is structured somewhat like a television episode, allowing the game to be consumed in short snacks. There’s been a lot of talk of doing away with the UI for this game, meaning you’ll actually have to check your coat pockets to see what you’re carrying.

Some creepy creatures have surfaced so far in the screens and demos we’ve been given, plenty of supernatural activity, and vehicle use, but we’ll have to wait a little longer to see if this one’s any good. What to Expect: All you need to know is one thing: Gil Grissom is in this game. Oh yes, the enigmatic oft-bearded forensic sleuth from television will be making yet another appearance on your PC.

Like in the show, you’ll be able to reconstruct crime scenes based on the little bits you find lying around, possibly with the aid of a blacklight that fits in your pocket. Though we don’t have any media up on this game, it’s likely the game will continue the TV series’ strong association of crime solving with blue and yellow neon lights.

They also apparently catalyze the crime solving process. What to Expect: So what if there’s no escape from the “perfect place of perfect happiness”? Who’d want to leave anyway? Well, our guess is “everyone. The deranged duo find themselves entering the world of cyberspace this time around and negotiating a stylish new virtual reality. As usual with Sam and Max, though, things get tricky. To begin with, this is a beta version of reality so things don’t appear to work exactly as you might expect.

How this differs from Sam and Max’s regular reality is a topic for another day. We’re anxious to see whether or not the game ups the ante in terms of puzzle difficulty and overall zaniness but we’ll be along for the ride regardless.

We just like dogs. What to Expect: Can the adventure genre ever evolve? Myst Online: Uru Live cracked some new ground, and hopefully Theseis will as well. It’s not an online game like MOUL, but it does give you control over how goals are achieved, instead of stuffing you through a gauntlet of painful linearity.

Though the initial setup seems tired, the rest of the game proves more interesting. It’s set in modern Athens, but the duo’s delving into the metropolitan underground instigates events rooted more in mythology.

Anyway, we haven’t really seen much of this one, but we’re eager to see anything that can buck adventure games from their seemingly irrecoverable funk.
