To correct these problems, perform the numbered tasks that follow. For best results, perform the tasks in the order listed. Record the tasks you perform and the results of each, including errors and other problems. If you later contact Adobe Technical Support, this information can help the support staff resolve the problem. Important: The troubleshooting tasks reflect the default interface of Windows.

Additionally, the tasks reflect the Classic View of the Control Panel. These buttons are on the Control Panel navigation bar on the left side of the window. Before performing any of these tasks, back up all personal files for example, Photoshop or InDesign files you created. Always restart the computer after a system error occurs to refresh its memory.

Continuing to work without restarting the computer can make the problem worse. If you do not find a solution to your problem, try the product-specific solutions. Note: Some of these procedures require you to locate hidden files or hidden folders.

By default, Windows Explorer doesn’t show hidden files, hidden folders, and filename extensions that it recognizes. Make sure that the system meets the minimum requirements for the software. For the most up-to-date system requirement information, search the knowledgebase for “system requirements” and the product name.

The latest version of the Adobe software could be more compatible with the operating system and drivers. Before you install an update or upgrade, make sure that the system meets the requirements. For the latest product updates and upgrades, visit Adobe – Downloads. An upgrade can solve a wider range of problems than a free update. Install any free updates before trying the rest of the tasks in this document. Complete the tasks listed here before you consider purchasing an upgrade.

See Install current Windows service packs and other updates. Re-create the Adobe application preferences file to eliminate problems that a damaged preferences file can cause. Startup items and services can cause system errors or freezes when running concurrently with the Elements Organizer. Startup items start automatically with Windows and services are specialized programs that support other programs.

To determine whether a startup item or service is conflicting with the Organizer, disable all startup items and non-essential services before you start the Organizer. An incompatible printer driver can cause system errors. To determine if the driver for the current default printer is causing the problem in the Elements Organizer, change the default printer. See Change the system default printer.

Once you have changed the default printer, try to re-create the problem in the Organizer. Then do one of the following:. If the problem recurs, then move the plug-ins back into the Elements Organizer plug-ins folder and proceed to Intermediate Troubleshooting. If the problem doesn’t recur, then identify and address conflicting plug-ins. If the tasks in the previous section don’t solve the problem, then do the following intermediate troubleshooting tasks. The Elements Organizer stores information about your photos and other media files in catalog files.

Damage in the current catalog file or one of its support files causes some system errors and freezes. For instructions on troubleshooting catalog files, see Troubleshoot catalog issues Organizer Elements 6 and later. Windows and applications store working data in temporary. Excessive or outdated temporary files can interfere with performance of Windows or applications. An outdated version of Apple QuickTime or a damaged QuickTime file can prevent the Elements Organizer from starting or operating correctly.

To update QuickTime, install the current version available from the Apple website. Disable these plug-ins to identify problems related to your computer’s processor. Once you have disabled the plug-ins, start the Elements 7 Organizer and try to re-create the problem.

Damaged or incomplete installation of Photoshop Elements can cause system errors. Remove the application and then reinstall it from the Desktop while start-up items and nonessential services are disabled. To disable startup items and nonessential services, see the instructions in Task 4 of this document. Many video card manufacturers frequently update their software drivers. If you haven’t recently updated the video card driver, then contact the video card manufacturer for an updated driver.

Or, download one from the manufacturer’s website. To determine the manufacturer of a video card, view the card’s properties in Device Manager. Many display card manufacturers frequently update their software drivers. If you haven’t recently updated the display card driver, then contact the card manufacturer for an updated driver.

To determine the manufacturer of the card, view the card’s properties in Device Manager. Create a user account that has the same permissions as the account you use when the problem occurs, or create a local administrator account.

Try to re-create the problem while you are logged in to the new account. For information on setting up a user account, see “To create a new user account” in Windows Help And Support, or contact your network administrator. If the problem does not recur when you are logged on to the new account, then the original user account could be damaged. The Elements Organizer generates a log of the steps it processes when launching.

By examining this log, you could discover the cause of the application failing to launch. The log file is called Log. If the tasks in the previous section don’t resolve the problem, then you can sometimes resolve the problem by repairing Windows XP and reinstalling Photoshop Elements. Troubleshoot codec problems by removing recently installed codecs or by temporarily disabling one codec at a time and attempting to re-create the problem. Note: Removing a codec can cause some video or audio files to become unreadable, or can cause some applications to stop working.

Use caution when removing codecs. If you are not certain which codecs to keep on your system, then contact Adobe Technical Support for additional assistance. If the problem returns, then set the default printer back to the different printer or virtual PostScript printer that you chose in the steps above.

In Elements 10 you can create text that runs around in a circle or follows the outline of a shape or an object in your photo. Brush-on textures Controlling the Colors You See. The Smart Brush tools now let you add textures to areas in your photos. New crop overlays The Crop Tool. When you decide to trim down a photo, Elements 10 has a new overlay feature to help you decide where to crop it. You can choose a basic grid or one that helps you position your subjects according to the Rule of Thirds or the Golden Ratio.

New Guided Edits Guided Edit. Elements 10 gives you two new Guided Edits, where the program walks you through the steps for creating effects that might be difficult to figure out on your own.

New Organizer searches Searching by Metadata. Elements has been able to search for and identify people in your photos for a while now, but Elements 10 can also search through your photos to find pets or objects. Mobile app compatibility. As of this writing, these apps are only for iPad, but Adobe plans to make them available for Android tablets, too.

Windows screen resolution fix. These have been fixed in Elements You could easily get confused about the differences between Elements and the full version of Adobe Photoshop. Because Elements is so much less expensive, and because many of its more advanced controls are tucked away, a lot of Photoshop aficionados tend to view Elements as some kind of toy version of their program. Your inkjet printer also uses those ink colors to print, but it expects you to give it an RGB file, which is what Elements creates.

The same holds true for a handful of other Elements tools. If you use Elements, then you have to look for another program to help out with that. And you also get Guided Edit mode Guided Edit , which provides step-by-step walkthroughs of some popular editing tasks, like sharpening a photo or cropping it to fit on standard photo paper.

The very best way to learn Elements is just to dive right in and play with it. Try all the different filters to see what they do. Add a filter on top of another filter. Click around on all the different tools and try them. Get crazy—you can stack up as many filters, effects, and Layer styles as you want without crashing the program.

Elements is a cool program and lots of fun to use, but figuring out how to make it do what you want is another matter. That approach is as useful to people who are advanced photographers as it is to those who are just getting started with their first digital cameras. This book periodically recommends other books, covering topics too specialized or tangential for a manual about Elements. For example, pop-out menus are more likely to have a white background on a Mac instead of a dark one.

However, the Editor is exactly the same in all versions of Elements. Part One. The first part of this book helps you get started with the program. Chapter 2 covers how to get photos into Elements, the basics of organizing them, and how to open files and create new images from scratch. Chapter 3 explains how to rotate and crop photos, and includes a primer on that most important digital imaging concept—resolution. Part Two. Chapter 4 shows how to use the Quick Fix window to dramatically improve your photos.

Part Three. Having Elements is like having a darkroom on your computer. Chapter 8 covers topics unique to people who use digital cameras, like Raw conversion and batch-processing photos. Chapter 10 shows you how to convert color photos to black and white, and how to tint and colorize black-and-white photos.

Part Four. This part covers the fun stuff: painting on photos and drawing shapes Chapter 12 , using filters and effects to create more artistic looks Chapter 13 , and adding text to images Chapter Part Five. You need to click the link within 24 hours of creating your account, or you may have to start the whole process again. Once you have an account, you can get to it by clicking Sign In at the top of the Editor or Organizer. You can also look at the bottom of the Welcome screen to see how much free space you have left, as shown in Figure Once you sign into your Photoshop.

You also see a link to your personalized web address. If you already have an Adobe ID maybe you created one for another Adobe program or you have a Mac and you created one while installing Elements , you claim your Photoshop. A free Photoshop. You can also upgrade to a paid account called Plus , which gives you a bit more of everything: more template designs for Online Albums, more downloads from the Content panel, more tutorials, and more storage space 20— GB depending on what level membership you choose.

Once you sign into your account, Elements logs you in automatically every time you launch the program. You may also need to turn off syncing in the Organizer in the Windows Notification area at the bottom right of your screen or in the OS X menubar at the upper right of your screen to stay logged out. The Editor Figure is the other main component of Elements.

This is the fun part of the program, where you get to adjust, transform, and generally glamorize your photos, and where you can create original artwork from scratch with drawing tools and shapes. You can operate the Editor in three different modes:. Full Edit. Most of the Quick Fix commands are also available via menus in the Full Edit window. The main Elements editing window, which Adobe calls Full Edit.

This is where you have access to all the Elements editing features. Quick Fix. For many Elements beginners, Quick Fix Figure ends up being their main workspace.

Chapter 4 gives you all the details on using Quick Fix. Guided Edit. It provides step-by-step walkthroughs of popular projects such as cropping photos and removing blemishes from them. It also hosts some fun special effects and workflows for more advanced users see Special Effects in Guided Edit. Use the Full, Quick, and Guided tabs near the top right of the Elements window to switch modes.

To get rid of the lock and free up your image for Organizer projects, go back to the Editor and close the photo there. The Quick Fix window. When you first open the Editor, you may be dismayed at how cluttered it looks. You can leave everything the way it is if you like a cozy area with everything at hand. Or, if you want a Zen-like empty workspace with nothing visible but your photo, you can move, hide, and turn off almost everything.

Figure shows two different views of the same workspace. To do that, just press the Tab key; to bring everything back into view, press Tab again.

Two different ways of working with the same images, panels, and tools. You can use any arrangement that suits you. Here, the Project bin has been combined with other floating panels and the whole group is collapsed to icons. The images here are in floating windows page If you have a small monitor, you may find it wastes too much desktop acreage, and in Elements you need all the working room you can get.

The downside of this technique is that you lose the ability to switch from Full to Quick to Guided Edit if you do this. To get those navigation buttons back, you have to go back to the Window menu and turn the Panel bin on again. You can also combine panels, as shown in Figure ; this works with both panels in the bin and freestanding panels.

You can also make a vertical panel group—where one panel appears above another—by letting go when you see a blue line at the bottom of the of the host panel, instead of an outline all the way around it as shown here.

To remove a panel from a group, simply drag it out of the group. If you want to return everything to how it looked when you first launched Elements, click Reset Panels not visible here at the top of your screen. When you launch Elements for the first time, the Panel bin contains three panels: Layers, Content, and Effects. In addition to combining panels as shown in Figure , you can also collapse any group of panels into icons as shown in Figure To use an iconized panel, click its icon and it jumps out to the side of the group, full size.

To shrink it back to an icon, click its icon again. You can combine panels in the bin by dragging their icons onto each other. Then those panels open as a combined group, like the panels in Figure Clicking one of the icons in the group collapses the opened, grouped panels back to icons.

You can also separate combined panels in icon view by dragging the icons away from each other. In the Editor, the long narrow photo tray at the bottom of your screen is called the Project bin Figure It shows you what photos you have open, but it also does a lot more than that. The bin has two drop-down menus:. Here you see the bin three ways: as it normally appears top , as a floating panel bottom left , and collapsed to an icon bottom right.

Show Open Files. If you send a bunch of photos over from the Organizer at once, you may think something went awry because no photo appears on your desktop or in the Project bin. If you regularly keep lots of photos open and you have an iPad, check out the Adobe Nav app, which lets you sort through open photos in Elements, see info about your photos, and switch tools without using your mouse.

You can read more about Nav at www. Bin Actions. You can also use this menu to reset the style source images you use in the Style Match feature, explained on Merging Styles. The Project bin is useful, but if you have a small monitor, you may prefer to use the space it takes up for your editing work. The Project bin behaves just like any of the other panels, so you can drag it loose from the bottom of the screen and combine it with the other panels.

You can even collapse it to an icon or drag it into the Panel bin. If you combine it with other panels, the combined panel may be a little wider than it would be without the Project bin, although you can still collapse the combined group to icons. Older versions of Elements used floating windows, where each image appears in a separate window that you could drag around.

Many people switch back and forth between floating and tabbed windows as they work, depending on which is most convenient. All the things you can do with image windows—including how to switch between tabbed view and floating windows—are explained on Image Views. Because your view may vary, most of the illustrations in this book show only the image itself and the tool in use, without a window frame or tab boundary around it.

Elements gives you an amazing array of tools to use when working on your photos. You get almost two dozen primary tools to help select, paint on, and otherwise manipulate images, and some of the tools have as many as six subtools hiding beneath them see Figure Right-clicking or holding the mouse button down when you click the icon reveals the hidden subtools. The long, skinny strip on the left side of the Full Edit window shown back in Figure on page 24 is the Tools panel.

It stays perfectly organized so you can always find what you want without ever having to tidy it up. To activate a tool, click its icon. Each tool comes with its own collection of options, as shown in Figure
